Mongolian coking coal's rising role in China's steel supply chain

Mongolian coking coal is becoming a lifeline for China’s reshaping steel supply chain. 

Last year, more than half of China's imported coking coal — around 51% — came from Mongolia, and industry analysts expect those volumes will keep rising. 

But this isn't simply a story about bigger coal reserves. It's about infrastructure. 

Over the past two decades, what was once a remote border crossing has evolved into one of the world's busiest land-based coal corridors. 

Mongolia exported a record 60.07 million metric tons of coking coal to China in 2025, while automated customs clearance, expanded border capacity and new rail links are steadily cutting transport times and costs. 

At the same time, Mongolian coal fits neatly into Chinese mills' blending strategies. Its relatively low ash and sulfur content complements domestic coal while remaining competitively priced against seaborne alternatives. 

Recent safety inspections following a fatal mine accident in Shanxi have also tightened domestic supply, reinforcing demand for imports. 

The result is a market where Mongolian coal is no longer just an alternative source — it's becoming a cornerstone of China's steelmaking supply chain.

And with new cross-border railway connections expected to begin operations from 2027, Mongolia's influence on China's steel industry looks set to strengthen even further.
