Project to be one of the tallest residential towers in Europe
Cemex low-carbon cement to cut emissions by up to 38%: company
Mexico-based global cement producer Cemex is supplying its proprietary low-carbon cement for the construction of a major residential skyscraper in Benidorm, Spain, Cemex said.
Cemex said the skyscraper, known as TM Tower, is expected to be more than 200 meters tall and one of the tallest residential buildings in Europe. Cemex is providing its low-carbon cement, known as Vertua® Supremo, for the building's structure and foundation.
"Compared with conventional cement, Vertua® Supremo may reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 55%," Cemex said in a June 25 statement. "For TM Tower, its use is estimated to have the potential to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 38% compared with cement products of equivalent characteristics available in the same market."
Cemex said construction of the tower is expected to be completed in 2028.
The company did not disclose how much cement it expects to supply for the project.
"The supply is being carried out through Arenas Forna, a strategic partner in the execution of the project, which is being developed by TM Grupo Inmobiliario," said Cemex.
On June 24, Spain's Ministry of Industry and Tourism awarded Eur200 million to Cemex's cement facility in Tarragona, Spain, to support industrial decarbonization initiatives.
The facility, which produces Cemex's low-carbon cement, has a total cement production capacity of 2.19 million metric tons/year.
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed CEMDEX Turkey at $55.00/metric ton FOB on June 25, down from $55.50/mt on June 18.
