Cemex clinked upgrade awarded Eur300 million

Cement, aluminum, paper, chemicals main takers

Spain's Ministry of Industry and Tourism awarded Eur518 million of recovery grants to 17 industrial projects to decarbonize their processes, it said June 24.

The cement sector received the bulk of the support, accounting for over Eur300 million of the total. The main recipients were Cemex in Tarragona (Eur200 million) and Votorantim Cementos in Leon (Eur119 million). The Cemex project involves upgrading its clinker furnace, while the Votorantim project will potentially include carbon capture. A number of other projects are linked with renewable energy supply.

Other sectors receiving funding include aluminum (Aluminio Espanol in Lugo, with Eur40 million), paper manufacturing (Union Industrial Papelera in Barcelona, with Eur38 million), and the chemical sector (Evonik, with Eur30 million), the ministry said.

The grants are the first in a funding line for "comprehensive decarbonization initiatives in the manufacturing industry" and are part of the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) focused on industrial decarbonization, which falls under the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.

The industrial decarbonization PERTE, backed by Eur3.2 billion in public investment, plans to mobilize a total investment of up to Eur11.8 billion. It aims to boost productivity by 10%, create 8,000 jobs, and reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions by 13 million mt/year.
