A number of major trends are impacting the US power sector, including lower utility load nearly across the board among electric utilities, largely because of milder temperatures this year but also in some cases because of lower industrial load. Some electric utility CEOs have also warned that global trade uncertainty is impacting industrial sales.

Dan Testa, associate editor for power news at S&P Global Market Intelligence; Mark Watson, senior editor for Americas power news at S&P Global Platts; and Rocco Canonica, manager of Americas power news at Platts, look at those key issues.

They also discuss the ongoing earnings impact of low wind resources through the first half of the year, the recent heat wave and price spikes in ERCOT, and Vistra and NRG management contemplating privatization amid a share price decline.
