Platts updates weightings used in Platts global petrochemical indices

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has updated Sept. 1 the weightings used in the Platts global petrochemical indices to reflect production capacities in 2025.

The updates reflect the changes in production capacities within each region, including shifts in global production ratios amid increasing capacities in Asia.

Platts announced the decision to change the indices on Aug. 1 in a subscriber note which can be found here:

Previously, the weightings for Platts daily global petrochemical indices for ethylene, propylene, benzene, toluene, paraxylene, low density polyethylene and polypropylene homopolymer were based on production capacity as of 2022.

These indices are calculated as weighted averages of daily assessments for Asia, Europe and the US.

The Platts Global Petrochemical Index is the weighted average of seven basic global indices, described above.

Platts has updated the weightings for each index by region as follows:

The affected indices appear in Platts Petrochemical Alert page 900 and in the Platts price database under the above mentioned codes.
