Listen: China surprises with weak return to thermal coal market after Lunar New Year holiday

After strong trading in the lead up to Chinese New Year in mid-February, market participants were expecting China to return to the seaborne spot market with gusto. But sellers have been left feeling disappointed as rising domestic coal production, falling Qinhuangdao prices and warmer weather in China have all combined to choke off demand to this important Asian market post-Lunar New Year.

In this podcast, senior editor Michael Cooper joins editor Michelle Zhao discuss recent price movements for thermal coal for China, and more broadly for Australia and Indonesia including the status of Jakarta’s new shipping regulations for coal exports.
