"In November and December, in line with mutually beneficial agreements reached between Gazprom and CNPC, daily gas export volumes to China are significantly above the previously-agreed plan for 2021," Gazprom said in a statement Dec. 14, after a video conference held by officials from Gazprom and its key Chinese partner CNPC.

Gazprom did not give new details on the scale of increased supplies in the last two months of the year. The company said previously that it expects to supply around 10 Bcm of gas to China via the Power of Siberia pipeline in 2021.

The company said Dec. 1 that supplies via the pipeline began to rise above contract levels on Nov. 2 and have exceed daily contractual obligations by more than a third.

"Gazprom continues to prepare for a further planned increase in gas exports in 2022, in accordance with the dynamics of increased supplies stipulated in the contract," the company said.

Gazprom did not give fresh details or planned delivery volumes in 2022.

In 2014, Gazprom and CNPC signed a 30-year purchase and sale agreement for supplies via Power of Siberia amounting to 38 Bcm/year. The first deliveries began in late 2019.

Mongolian route

The company also gave an update on progress on a feasibility study for construction of the Soyuz Vostok gas pipeline to supply Russian gas to China via Mongolia, during the meeting.

Since 2020, Gazprom has been assessing the viability of deliveries to China via Mongolia of up to 50 Bcm/year. In April 2021 a feasibility for the Soyuz Vostok line was approved.

Participants in the meeting also discussed cooperation on underground gas storage and scientific, technical and oil projects.

In 2016, Gazprom signed a memorandum of understanding on gas storage and power generation in China.

The Gazprom-CNPC talks came on the eve of a video conference between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled for Dec. 15.
