London — Combined wind and solar generation in Germany is forecast to reach a record high this week after Monday's total narrowly missed the country's daily all-time high, transmission system operator data and a forecast by showed Tuesday.

Wind and solar generation on Monday amounted to 1.04 TWh, compared with the record of 1.05 TWh on December 8, 2018, TSO data aggregated by Fraunhofer ISE showed. forecasts wind and solar combined to average well above 30 GW over the next six days.

If realized, this would result in weekly output above 5 TWh, beating the current record of 4.9 TWh generated in week 49 last December.

Wind power covered 64% of German power demand on Monday and has been Germany's single biggest source of electricity year to date, the data show.

Variations in wind resource are set to see generation drop to 10 GW overnight into Wednesday before possibly climbing to 50 GW overnight into Saturday, the GFS weather model showed.

Meanwhile German weekly solar output totaled 0.74 TWh last week, a five-month high, with 11 days this year already witnessing solar peaks above 20 GW.

The surge in renewables is expected to push average German weekly spot power prices down to levels seen last spring, week 10 closing just above Eur33/MWh Friday, EEX exchange data showed.

Installed solar capacity now stands at 46 GW after Germany added 3 GW last year. Wind capacity is just below 60 GW, including 6 GW offshore.


Widening the view, across Europe wind power covered 24% of electricity demand Monday with combined wind and solar output peaking at 125 GW for a number of hours around midday, TSO data aggregated by WindEurope showed.

Europe's combined wind and solar capacity is on course to reach 300 GW before the summer, with 297 GW already installed by the end of 2018, according WindEurope and SolarPower Europe data.

Last year, wind additions fell to a seven-year low of 11.7 GW, while solar growth rebounded to 8 GW, the groups said in their annual reports.

Combined wind and solar generation is up 3% on the year at 62 TWh for Europe's five biggest markets, which added 13 GW in 2018, S&P Global Platts data show.
