Platts launches weekly and quarterly FOLicht ethanol assessments in Europe

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has launched and taken ownership of 23 FOLicht weekly spot and contract European ethanol assessments, effective Sept. 1.

The new assessments will provide transparency to the non-fuel ethanol markets of beverage and industrial grades, as well as fuel-grade ethanol in Eastern Europe.

Platts now publishes these assessments as part of the migration of prices from Commodity Insights' biofuel research and analytics coverage.

Platts has launched the following European ethanol assessments:

Platts will publish all assessments in cubic meters, and publish monthly averages for all spot assessments.

The quality specifications of the assessments are as follows:

ENA: undenatured extra neutral alcohol with 96% alcohol by volume, basic grain mix

Industrial grade 99 and 96: industrial grade ethanol with 99% and 96% alcohol by volume, respectively

Industrial REN 96 grade: Rectified Extra Neutral industrial with 96% alcohol by volume

Anhydrous fuel ethanol: fuel ethanol that meets European specification EN 15376

Delivered at Place (DAP) spot assessments reflect delivery over a 30-day period starting one week forward from the day of publication. The DAP contract prices reflect contracted volumes for delivery across the current quarter, published on the first working day of that quarter. For example, on Sept. 1, 2025, DAP contract prices reflect delivery over Q3 2025. On Oct. 1, 2025, DAP contract prices will roll forward to reflect delivery over Q4 2025.

Free on Board (FOB) spot assessments reflect loading over a 30-day period starting one week forward from the day of publication.

The assessments reflect a volume size of one to two trucks. Other volumes may be considered and normalized to the assessment specification.

The spot assessments will be published at 16:30 London time on Mondays and follow the UK holiday calendar. If Monday is a non-publishing day, then the assessments will be published on the previous working day.

The contract prices will be published at 16:30 London time on the first working day of the new quarter.

Platts spot and contract price assessments consider market information reported to Platts and published throughout the week, including bids/offers/trades, indicated levels and values received throughout the day, as well as other information deemed relevant by Platts.

In the absence of observable spot market activity, Platts may consider other verifiable data reported.

The launch of these assessments was confirmed on Aug. 1 in a subscriber note available here.

The assessments will be published in the Platts Weekly Ethanol report and Platts Biofuels Alert, and will continue to be published in the World Ethanol Price report.
