Platts to update SAF ETJ USGC cost of production methodology, Aug. 24

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, will update its US Gulf Coast ethanol-to-jet (ETJ) sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) cost-of-production prices, effective Aug. 24, 2026.

Based on delays in the originally planned US SAF ETJ facilities and evolving production costs, Platts will revise the capacity from 26 million gallons to 10 million gallons to better reflect the current market supply.

Platts will also update key cost inputs, including capital expenditure (capex) and feedstocks, and introduce a royalty cost component. The prices will continue to reflect the cost of producing SAF via the ethanol-to-jet pathway using ethanol and hydrogen as feedstocks.

The main changes are listed below:

Category Platts Current Platts effective Aug. 24
Capacity (Mgal/year) 26 10
CAPEX ($ million) 137 147.5
Brazilian Ethanol feedstock Ethanol FOB Santos Brazil Cargo (AAWFO00) Hydrous Ethanol ANP FOB Santos/Paranagua (AAXNR00)
Royalties - 6% x (Feedstocks + By-products + Utilities costs)

The following assessments, and their related monthly averages, will be impacted by this change:

Assessment name Biofuel Symbol Refined Symbol
SAF ETJ Cost of production w/ credits (USGC ¢/gal) ESTFA00 ESTFE00
SAF ETJ Cost of production w/ credits (USGC $/mt) ESTFC00 ESTFG00
SAF ETJ Cost of production w/o credits (USGC ¢/gal) ESTFB00 ESTFF00
SAF ETJ Cost of production w/o credits (USGC $/mt) ESTFD00 ESTFH00

Platts proposed these changes on July 20.
