Platts launches a US SAF implied CO2e price assessment effective June 1

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, has launched a daily calculated assessment for US Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) implied CO2 equivalent price, effective June 1.

The implied carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions SAF assessment reflects the target price of scope 1 and scope 3 emission reductions combined. This price reflects the price difference between SAF and jet fuel, resulting in a price parity between the two liquid fuels. For example, if the implied US SAF CO2e price is $300/tCO2e, this means that if the combined value of SAF scope 1 and scope 3 equals that price, the differential between the Platts SAF (credits detached) assessment and Platts Jet Kero Los Angeles CA Pipeline assessment (PJAAP00) is fully offset.

As SAF volumes increase, so does a growing need for a transparent, standardized index reflecting SAF's theoretical CO2e reduction cost.

This calculation is based on the Platts SAF (H-S) CA Premium (credits detached) (SFCCD00) price and equivalent carbon emissions reduction assumptions.

The SAF abatement cost reflects ISCC- or RSB-CORSIA-certified SAF, based on SPK-HEFA, delivered to LAX, and uplifted 5-30 days forward.

Platts considers a net SAF caloric value of 22 MJ/kg aligned with the ASTM D7566 and a relative density of 776 kg/cu m or 2.8769 kg/gal (at 15 degrees Celsius).

Platts also considers a carbon intensity for SAF of 22 gCO2e/MJ and for Jet A-1 baseline a value of 89 gCO2e/MJ.

The assessment is expressed in $/mtCO2e and is databased under the following symbol:
