Platts to launch Brazil biodiesel assessments including ICMS, May 4

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, will launch new biodiesel DAP Paulínia, Brazil price assessments that include the state-level ICMS tax, effective May 4, 2026, following the implementation of Brazil's single-phase tax system.

This follows a proposal published on Feb. 16.

Until April 30, 2023, ICMS was treated as a deferred tax for Brazilian biodiesel producers. As a result, it was not included in Platts pricing methodology when the DAP Paulínia biodiesel assessment was originally launched Nov. 3, 2021.

The new assessments will reflect the full adoption of the single-phase taxation system in Brazil and respond to requests from market participants for Platts to align with the now widely accepted market convention of pricing biodiesel on an ICMS-inclusive basis.

Platts will launch the following assessments that include ICMS, effective May 4, 2026, under the indicated names:

  • Biodiesel DAP Paulinia BRL/CBM inc-taxes
  • Biodiesel DAP Paulinia BRL/CBM WAvg inc-taxes
  • Biodiesel DAP Paulinia BRL/CBM MAvg inc-taxes
  • Biodiesel DAP Paulinia $/mt inc-taxes
  • Biodiesel DAP Paulinia $/mt WAvg inc-taxes
  • Biodiesel DAP Paulinia $/mt MAvg inc-taxes

The existing Biodiesel DAP Paulinia assessments under Platts codes ABPLA00 and ABPLB00, along with their respective weekly and monthly averages, will continue to be published. However, the daily assessment will be calculated by deducting the applicable ICMS from the new ICMS-inclusive biodiesel assessment. The names of the current assessments will be updated to clearly reflect the exclusion of ICMS, as follows:

  • ABPLA00 Biodiesel DAP Paulinia BRL/CBM ex-ICMS
  • ABPLA04 Biodiesel DAP Paulinia BRL/CBM WAvg ex-ICMS
  • ABPLA03 Biodiesel DAP Paulinia BRL/CBM MAvg ex-ICMS
  • ABPLB00 Biodiesel DAP Paulinia $/mt ex-ICMS
  • ABPLB04 Biodiesel DAP Paulinia $/mt WAvg ex-ICMS
  • ABPLB03 Biodiesel DAP Paulinia $/mt MAvg ex-ICMS

As with the existing Biodiesel DAP Paulinia assessments, the new assessments will be available on the Platts Biofuels Alert fixed pages 0010, 0011, 0220 and 0221. They will also be published on the Platts Brazil Fuels Weekly market report.
