New York — Aluminium extrusions from China will be subject to registration by each national customs authority in the bloc as of Aug. 25, the European Commission announced Aug. 24.
The European Commission announced Feb. 14 the launch of an anti-dumping investigation into aluminium extrusions originating from China. The investigation followed a complaint by industry body European Aluminium after Chinese shipments of extrusions had reached around a 10% share of the EU market, with Chinese deliveries of semi-fabricated aluminium products more than doubling in the previous five years.
The products subject to registration -- commonly referred to as "extrusions", referring to their most common manufacturing process -- are aluminium bars, rods, profiles (whether or not hollow), tubes and pipes.
"With today's announcement, the European Commission has directed the customs authorities to take the appropriate steps to register imports, so that anti-dumping measures may subsequently (and retroactively) be applied against those imports from the date of registration," European Aluminium said.
"We applaud the commission for taking this necessary and bold measure...we hope the registration measure will very soon be followed by effective anti-dumping measures that can more structurally address these issues," European Aluminium Director General Gerd Gotz said.
In addition to the current investigation, the European Commission announced on Aug. 14 the opening of a separate anti-dumping investigation into certain aluminium flat rolled products originating from China.
