Aluminum sheet capacity expanded to 680,000 mt/year
Boosts recycling capacity to 490,000 mt/year
Novelis has completed a $150 million investment to expand, by 100,000 mt each, aluminum rolling and recycling capacity at its plant in Pindamonhangaba, Brazil, the company said Aug. 12.
The investment at the complex is expected to boost annual capacity to roughly 680,000 mt for aluminum sheet and 490,000 mt for recycling, according to Novelis.
The additional recycling capacity is the latest step in support of Novelis' sustainability goals to reduce its carbon footprint by 30% by 2026 and to reach carbon neutrality by 2050, which were announced in April, the company said.
"Recycling and increasing the use of recycled content in our products is the cornerstone of Novelis' sustainability journey," CEO Steve Fisher said in a statement. "We will continue to identify and invest in projects like this expansion in Brazil that will move Novelis toward being a fully circular business."
The additional aluminum sheet capacity allows the company to support growing demand among beverage packaging and specialty customers in the region, it said.
Located in the state of São Paulo, the Pindamonhangaba facility is the company's largest in South America and produces aluminum sheet for beverage cans, as well as consumer and industrial and packaging markets.
