Malaysia subsidizes cement 30% below market

Scheme targets 500,000 affordable homes

Malaysia is subsidizing cement used in affordable housing projects, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government said in a statement May 20.

The move is part of Malaysia's efforts to mitigate the impact of rising costs linked to the global energy crisis following the Middle East conflict, the ministry said.

Under the Rahmah Cement Scheme, the ministry is offering MR290/metric ton ($73.07/mt) for bulk cement and MR17.50/mt for a 50-kilogram bag of cement -- both about 30% lower than the regular market price.

The subsidized cement will be used for affordable housing projects worth MR13,000 each, that are funded by the state and federal governments, the ministry said.

An initial quota of 1.6 million mt of subsidized cement will support the target construction of 500,000 affordable housing units within five years, according to the ministry.

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed ASTM Type I bulk cement at $38.50/mt FOB Vietnam on May 21, unchanged from the previous week.
