Vietnam Cement deploys AI to boost safety monitoring

Digital tools support emissions reduction goals

Vietnamese cement prices hold steady at $38.5/mt

Vietnam Cement Corp. is stepping up the use of artificial intelligence and digital tools across its operations to improve workplace safety and support emissions reduction, as part of a broader push toward efficiency and sustainability, according to a company statement on April 21.

The initiative was highlighted during the company's launch of its 2026 Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) action month at its Bim Son unit in Thanh Hoa on April 20, where management outlined plans to integrate AI into risk monitoring and operational control.

Chairman Nguyen Quoc Viet said cement production carries inherent risks across the value chain, from quarrying and material handling to high-temperature processing, and requires stricter, more systematic safety management. He added that deploying AI to identify potential hazards at an early stage would help shift the company toward more preventive risk management.

VICEM said in the statement that it plans to expand digital platforms to monitor equipment and workplace conditions, while strengthening inspection systems and standardizing safety benchmarks across its operations. The company is also increasing training focused on practical risk response and operational safety.

Several Asia-based market participants said the move reflects a broader trend among regional producers to adopt digitalization to manage costs and meet tightening environmental requirements. "There is growing pressure on producers to improve efficiency while addressing emissions and safety standards," a Vietnam-based trader said.

VICEM added that technology adoption would also support its green production strategy, including efforts to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency.

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed cement (ASTM type I) FOB Vietnam at $38.5/mt on April 16, unchanged from the previous week. Platts also assessed cement clinker FOB Vietnam at $34.5/mt, up from $34/mt FOB the previous week.
