THAILAND DATA: LNG imports rise 37% on year to 679,779 mt in October

Thailand imported a record-high 679,779 mt of LNG in October, a rise of 37.3% year on year, according to data released Nov. 24 by the Customs Department.

The country's highest ever monthly LNG import volume in October was also 20.3% higher month on month, and is attributed to a surge in spot LNG trades to offset a sharp decline in its domestic gas production.

Thailand imported the LNG from seven suppliers in October, with Australia and Malaysia being the largest sellers.

The Southeast Asia nation imported 5.36 million mt of LNG in the first 10 months, up 9.8% year on year, mainly from Qatar, Malaysia and Nigeria.

Thailand imported 789.3 million cubic feet/day of natural gas from Myanmar in October, down 0.8% from 796 million cubic feet/day in October 2020, the customs data showed.

The kingdom imported 737.7 million cubic feet/day of natural gas from Myanmar in the first 10 months, 0.1% lower than 738.3 million cubic feet/day seen over the same period in 2020.

Thailand consumed 4.48 billion cubic feet/day of natural gas over January-September, up 1.1% year on year. Of the total, 2.67 billion cubic feet/day was consumed by the power sector, a rise of 0.2% on the year, accounting for 59.6% of the total. The consumption of gas separation plants in the period was 924 million cubic feet/day, an increase of 1.6% year on year and accounting for 20.6% of the total.

This was followed by the consumption of the industrial sector at 773 million cubic feet/day, a rise of 7.7% year on year and accounting for 17.3% of the total, data from the Energy Policy and Planning Office released Nov. 12 showed. Data for the first 10 months of this year is scheduled to be announced in December.
