Arrangement strengthens Japan's energy supply chain
Petronas to deliver its first LNG Canada cargo to Japan's Toho Gas
Malaysian state-owned Petronas has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security, or Jogmec, for a strategic LNG arrangement.
This arrangement, announced by Petronas LNG marketing Vice President Shamsairi Ibrahim at the LNG Producer-Consumer Conference 2025 on June 20, aims to strengthen Japan's energy supply chain.
Petronas could be an LNG supplier to Jogmec in case of emergency if the MOC receives a firm agreement. Jogmec procures oil and gas at the request of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry when Japanese power utilities face difficulties in purchasing them, according to its website.
Regarding LNG Canada, Ibrahim said the first cargo is scheduled to load "very soon," while Petronas' first cargo from LNG Canada will be delivered to its customer, Japan's Toho Gas, in July.
At the press conference held after the conference, Yuya Hasegawa, director of the energy resources development division at Japan's Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, said this is the second such LNG agreement after Italy's Eni.
Jogmec signed an MOC with Eni in October 2024, collaborating in the gas and LNG field to increase the diversification of supply sources, according to an Eni statement at the time.
