Plant to utilize ready2grind system for supplementary cementitious materials
Facility designed to withstand hurricane conditions, operational by 2027
Gebr. Pfeiffer has secured a contract with Redwing Materials, a unit of Maschmeyer Concrete, to construct a slag grinding plant at Port Redwing in Tampa, Florida, the company announced in a press release Nov. 21.
This facility will focus on producing granulated blast furnace slag, a byproduct of steel manufacturing that can be used as a supplementary cementitious material in concrete production.
The project is part of Maschmeyer Concrete's strategy to integrate its supply chain and explore sustainable options in construction materials. The use of slag in cement can enhance durability and reduce the carbon footprint of concrete, aligning with broader industry goals of sustainability.
The new plant will utilize a compact grinding system known as the ready2grind technology, which is designed for energy efficiency and operational flexibility. It will be equipped with an MVR vertical roller mill featuring four rollers, ensuring high availability and performance. The facility will also incorporate advanced classifiers to optimize product quality. Additionally, it will be engineered to withstand Florida's coastal weather, addressing potential challenges related to hurricanes and extreme conditions.
The collaboration between the two companies has developed over several years, with planning and feasibility studies beginning in 2023. The plant is anticipated to commence operations in early 2027, marking a significant step for Maschmeyer in expanding its product offerings in the cement market.
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, last assessed Cement CIF Houston at $84/mt on Nov. 20.
