Meca clay process to reduce clinker ratio below 40%
Aims for net-zero concrete by 2050, lowering emissions
Greek cement producer TITAN Group has signed a strategic partnership with Germany's ThyssenKrupp Polysius to advance the development and deployment of the latter's meca clay technology, a low-carbon solution aimed at reducing CO₂ emissions from cement production, the companies said Nov. 5.
Under the agreement, TITAN plans to implement the meca clay process at its Patras cement plant in Greece, the first industrial application of the technology within the group.
"This initiative is a key element of our strategy to establish the TITAN Centre for Advanced Technologies in Patras, which will serve as a hub for decarbonization and innovation projects across the group," TITAN Group Chief Technology Officer Samir Cairae said.
The project aims to reduce the clinker-to-cement ratio in future low-carbon cement to below 40%, down from about 93% in traditional Portland cement.
The meca clay process activates alternative cementitious materials to replace part of the clinker used in cement, the main source of CO₂ emissions, helping to lower energy use and carbon intensity while maintaining product performance, the companies said.
Pilot activities are scheduled for 2026, with further expansion expected, the companies said.
The partners said they aim to accelerate the development of next-generation low-clinker cements for European and US markets, contributing to TITAN's target of delivering net-zero concrete by 2050.
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, last assessed CEMDEX Turkey at $54/mt FOB on Oct. 30.
