Initiative combines upgraded kilns, carbon capture, bioenergy

Aims to prevent 70,000 mt of CO2 emissions annually

Belgium-headquartered mining company Carmeuse has received funding from the European Innovation Fund for its Leopard project, which aims to advance low-carbon lime production, the company said Nov. 5.

The initiative combines upgraded kiln systems with membrane-based carbon capture and bioenergy integration. It is expected to prevent more than 70,000 metric tons/year of CO2 emissions, while removing additional carbon from the atmosphere through bioenergy carbon capture and storage (BECCS).

The project, based in Aisemont, Belgium, relies solely on electrical energy, supporting scalability and wider adoption across the sector. By concentrating CO2 in kiln flue gases before capture, the approach also lowers operating costs and avoids generating additional emissions, the company said in a statement.

Carmeuse plans to refine the technology and explore replication at other sites, the statement added.

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, last assessed CEMDEX Turkey at $54/mt FOB on Oct. 30.
