Highlights
US 2020 output annualized at 536 million st
Five-year average in week 48 of 14.4 million st
Houston — Weekly US coal production was estimated at 10.6 million st in the week ended Nov. 28, down 5.2% from the previous week, Energy Information Administration data showed Dec. 3.
From the year-ago week, output declined 10.6%. Additionally, the five-year average for week 48 is 14.4 million st, leaving the most recent week at a 26.7% deficit.
Through 48 weeks, production totaled about 493 million st, down 13.3% year on year. With four more weeks until the end of the year, 2020 output is annualized to nearly 536 million st, down 23.9% from 2019.
Northern Appalachian production declined the most week on week, by 6.6%, to nearly 1.5 million st. Year on year, it dropped 17.3%.
Through 48 weeks, NAPP output was about 68.8 million st, and it was annualized at 74.5 million st, down 28% from last year.
Output from Illinois Basin totaled about 1.3 million st, down 5.7% from the week before and down 17% from the year-ago week.
IB production totaled about 62.4 million st through the year so far, while on an annualized basis, it is expected to be 67.6 million st, down 32.1% year on year.
Central Appalachian dropped 5.5% week on week to nearly 1.2 million st and fell 11.6% year on year.
Year to date, CAPP output is estimated at 58.4 million st. Annualized, it is projected to be about 63.3 million st, down 26.6% compared to 2019 output.
Production from Wyoming and Montana, which is largely made up of Powder River Basin coal, was about 5 million st, down 4.2% from the previous week and down 9.1% from the year-ago week.
Output from the two states through 48 weeks was about 277 million st, while on an annualized basis, it is expected to be 246 million st, down 20.7% year on year.
