Thai rice exports thrive in the US despite tariffs
Thailand's branding, quality controls boost competitiveness
Thai rice exports to the US demonstrate how consumer preferences can outweigh both tariffs and domestic supply. The US is a significant rice producer, especially of long grain varieties from states such asArkansas and California, but it does not grow exact substitutes for Thailand's premium Hom Mali rice.
Even a 19% tariff has not been enough to dampen buying; consumers are willing to pay for more consistent quality, and importers view the premium segment as resilient.
Over January to October 2025, Thailand exported roughly 6.42 million metric tons of rice, with the US accounting for about 10.5% of that total.
Additionally, Thailand's strong branding around Hom Mali rice is supported by strict quality controls, and geographic identity helps maintain its competitive edge.
