Biobunker sales rise to 39,500 in July

Bio-blended LSFO dominates at 29,900 mt

Weak demand persists amid policy uncertainty

Singapore's biobunker market regained some ground in July, snapping a run of declines over the previous four months.

Preliminary data from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore showed that total biobunker sales rose 5.3% month over month to 39,500 metric tons, although sales were down 70.4% year over year.

Market participants said biobunker demand in 2026 has been weighed down by lackluster buying interest, delayed policy support and heightened geopolitical uncertainty.

"Not much of an increase — still weak demand," a Singapore-based trader said.

A bunker supplier in Singapore said the marginal rise to 39,500 mt — from 37,500 mt in June — was largely driven by term contracts rather than spot purchases.

The supplier added that higher premiums for conventional fuels may have encouraged some shipowners to lift biofuels alongside conventional bunkers.

"Since very low sulfur fuel oil and high sulfur fuel oil premiums are much higher now, some of the owners might take biofuels as well," the supplier said. "This helps buyers earn credits and reduce costs compared with conventional fuel oil, because conventional fuel oil is much higher."

B100 sales continued to fall in July, declining to 1,400 mt, following a sharp drop from 12,800 mt in May to 1,500 mt in June.

Bio-blended low sulfur fuel oil remained the dominant grade in Singapore's biobunker market, with sales of 29,900 mt. Volumes fell 2.6% month over month and 62.9% year over year, marking the lowest monthly bio-LSFO sales recorded so far in 2026.

Market participants said volatility in crude oil prices continued to dampen buying interest, with several suppliers reporting thin demand as buyers faced elevated conventional bunker prices. They added that biobunker premiums typically move inversely to conventional fuel prices.

Others said inquiries remained sporadic, while many buyers continued to delay procurement amid uncertain market conditions, as shipowners sought to minimize fuel costs in an increasingly volatile environment.

"Demand remains weak — the market is still waiting for the next International Maritime Organization meeting for clarity," another Singapore-based trader said.

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed Singapore-delivered B24 and B30 low-sulfur biobunkers at $990.38/mt and $1,024.38/mt, respectively, on Aug. 14, reflecting premiums of $238/mt and $272/mt over the FOB Singapore Marine Fuel 0.5%S benchmark.

Platts assessed high-sulfur bio-blended grades at $824.16/mt for B24 and $873.16/mt for B30, corresponding to premiums of $247/mt and $296/mt over the FOB Singapore 380 CST 3.5%S benchmark.
