Second round focus on agriculture and a level playing field
Mexico exports 321,000 mt of phosphates to US
The US and Mexico will hold a series of bilateral trade rounds under the joint review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, the US Trade Representative said May 27.
Under the agreement, Mexico exported 321,000 metric tons of ammonium phosphates and superphosphates to the US during 2025, making the US the top export destination, accounting for 85.8% of Mexico's export share, according to S&P Global CERA data.
In contrast, Mexico has decreased its imports of US ammonium phosphates to 58,000 mt in 2025 from 251,000 mt in 2023.
"The negotiations will focus on ensuring that the USMCA benefits US manufacturers, farmers, ranchers, workers, service suppliers, and businesses of all sizes, including small and medium-sized enterprises," according to the USTR.
The first bilateral negotiating round with Mexico will take place on May 28-29 and is to feature negotiations on economic security and rules of origin for key industrial goods, the USTR said.
Both countries will hold a second round in Washington on June 16-17, focusing on agriculture and a level playing field, followed by a third round in Mexico City during the week of July 20.
Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed bulk granular triple superphosphate at $698/mt FOB Mexico on May 21, higher week over week.
