Demand loses momentum
Prices expected to recover
Platts assessed fresh US jumbo boneless skinless chicken breasts (BSB) at $1.45/pound Feb. 10, down 5 cents from Feb. 9 and the first price reduction of the year after the market peaked at $1.50/lb Jan. 29.
US BSB began the year strong, posting a 31-cent increase to reach the Jan. 29 peak.
The market saw support from strong domestic demand, consistent with the typical seasonal uptrend. Prices also drew support in January as winter storms brought sub-zero temperatures and snowstorms across the US Southeast, forcing some processing plants to halt operations and slowing deliveries across much of the region.
Market participants said demand has recently lost momentum. "Looks like demand has flattened over the past weeks, and looking at the price trend, it's very different from 2025 YTD," an exporter said. "I don't expect to see an explosive upward trend."
While prices seem to have crested from recent highs, the season uptrend is expected to continue. "Short-term weakness might be a reflection of the elevated wing demand for the Super Bowl, which took the majority of ad space for the week away from BSB fillets," said Kelly Seier, a commodity research analyst with S&P Global Energy.
