Project eyes positioning Skavsta as clean energy hub

Nordic energy company Fortum and Skavsta Logistics and Air Freight have signed a letter of intent to jointly explore the development of hydrogen and electro-sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) production at Stockholm Skavsta Airport, the airport said in a Linkedin post on Jan. 19.

Under the non-binding agreement, the partners will assess the technical, commercial and regulatory feasibility of producing hydrogen and e-SAF, alongside battery energy storage systems (BESS) and heat recovery solutions, within a 100,000-square-meter site in the airport's western precinct. The area is currently undergoing detailed planning in cooperation with Nykoping Municipality.

The LOI grants Fortum access to the site during the planning phase to conduct studies ahead of any potential investment decision. Skavsta Logistics and Air Freight is jointly owned by Arlandastad Group and Billstrom Riemer Andersson Bygg.

The companies said the project is intended to evaluate the potential for positioning Skavsta as a clean-energy and low-carbon aviation fuels hub, leveraging proximity to aviation demand, existing logistics infrastructure and grid access. No construction timeline or production capacity has been disclosed.

The initiative reflects growing interest across Europe in on-airport hydrogen and e-SAF production, as airlines prepare for tighter emissions mandates and long-term decarbonization targets, though projects remain at an early, exploratory stage.

European Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin-compliant renewable hydrogen prices fell Jan. 16 due to higher wind output.

Feedstock power prices in Northwest Europe declined due to stronger wind generation.

Platts, part of S&P Global Energy, assessed German renewable hydrogen prices 9% lower day over day at Eur8.70/kg ($10.09/kg) on Jan. 16. Prices in France declined 12% to Eur7.59/kg over the same period.
