Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has launched baseload spark spread assessments for Tokyo, Japan, on June 1.
The spark spread assessments are calculated as the differences of Platts JKM LNG derivatives assessments for the following forward periods over the Japanese power futures (Tokyo, Baseload) settlement prices for the same periods published by the European Energy Exchange (EEX).
The assessment periods are for the JKM pricing month, next three months forward, the next two active quarters, and the next active season.
Platts decided to launch these assessments on May 3, via a subscriber note available here: https://www.spglobal.com/commodityinsights/en/our-methodology/subscriber-notes/050323-platts-to-launch-new-tokyo-baseload-spark-spread-assessments-on-june-1, following a proposal on April 12, via a subscriber note available here: https://www.spglobal.com/commodityinsights/en/our-methodology/subscriber-notes/041223-platts-proposes-to-launch-new-tokyo-baseload-spark-spread-assessments-on-june-1
These new spark spread calculations aim to provide the market with greater insights into margins for gas-fired power plants in Japan. The new spark spreads are published in $/MMBtu and Yen/kWh.
The new calculations are published in LNG Daily, on Platts Dimensions Pro, as well as on the LNG and PGN pages 0016 on a daily basis.
