Platts to publish additional crude grade carbon intensity values

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will begin publishing monthly carbon intensity calculations for 27 additional crude oil fields in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America and North America, effective January 15, 2024.

This data is produced by the S&P Global Commodity Insights analytics team. These crude carbon intensity values will be published in both gCO2e/MJ and kgCO2e/b units, and will be added to the list of Platts existing crude grade carbon intensity calculations, bringing the current total number of grades to 68, and increasing transparency on carbon intensities in the global crude market.

The new grades include:

Iranian Heavy Es Sider Thunder Horse
Iranian Light Al Jurf Poseidon
Foroozan Arab XL Hebron
Basrah Heavy Arabian Super Light Hibernia
Kirkuk Arab Medium Cusiana
Basrah Light Arab Heavy Agbami-Ekoli
CPC Blend ESPO Bonga
Kuwait Ural Bozhong
El Sharara Mars Azeri Light

In line with the current methodology for carbon intensity scores produced by the S&P Global Commodity Insights analytics team, the carbon intensity of these 27 new grades will be calculated using Stanford's Oil Production Greenhouse Gas Emissions Estimator (OPGEE) 2.0 model, combined with proprietary research and data from S&P Global.

Platts upstream crude carbon intensity calculations measure the impact of greenhouse gas emissions in the production lifecycle from production to storage terminal. The methodology guide and a complete list of existing grades, fields, and transport routes for Platts upstream carbon intensity, midstream carbon intensity, and carbon offset premiums is available here.

These values will not have a corresponding carbon intensity premium.
