The rapid development of solar and wind generation in the California Independent System Operator footprint over the past few years has dramatically altered the pricing dynamics, and even more generation is on the horizon. The ISO curtails renewable generation during periods of oversupply in order to balance the grid. Wind and solar curtailments hit a record level in May 2019.
S&P Global Platts has launched California ISO renewable generation curtailment indices to provide additional market insight around wind and solar curtailment in the ISO, effective December 16, 2019.
The indices will be published in megawatts by calculating daily wind and solar curtailments reported by CAISO against historical CAISO generation.
Platts will publish the following daily indices:
Solar peak curtailment in market data category MD and CAICA00 in category ES.
Solar off-peak curtailment in market data category MD and CAICB00 in category ES
Solar 24-hour curtailment in market data category MD and CAICC00 in category ES
Wind peak-curtailment in market data category MD and CAICD00 in category ES
Wind off-peak curtailment in market data category MD and CAICE00 in category ES
Wind 24-hour curtailment in market data category MD and CAICF00 in category ES
Wind and Solar peak curtailment in market data category MD and CAICG00 in category ES
Wind and Solar off-peak curtailment in market data category MD and CAICH00 in category ES
Wind and Solar 24-hour curtailment in market data category MD and CAICI00 in category ES
