Platts extends Brazil Power forward curve assessments

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has launched 13 new daily assessments for the Brazil Power forward curve, effective Dec. 16, 2024.

The Brazil free power market comprises more than 51,300 consumers and 42% of total demand, according to the Brazilian Association of Energy Traders. The share of the free market could grow to 60% by 2030 due to new government regulations allowing lower-voltage consumers to participate, according to Commodity Insights.

The assessments consider market information reported to Platts and published throughout the day, including firm bids and offers, trades and indicative values, as well as any other data deemed relevant to the assessment process.

The assessments represent conventional power delivered in Brazil's Southeast/Central-West subsystem, as defined by the Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico, and are published as values in Brazilian reals per megawatt-hour ($R/MWh) and US dollars per megawatt-hour ($/MWh).

The assessments consider data submitted to Platts until 4 pm Houston time and follow the Platts US publishing schedule. The assessments reflect electricity for delivery within stated months, quarters and calendar years, as follows:

The quarter assessments roll on the first day of the new quarter. For example, on Jan. 1, 2025, Q+5 will roll into Q2 2026 and Q+6 will roll into Q3 2026.

The calendar year assessments roll into the next year on the first day of the new year. For example, on Jan. 1, 2025, Y+3 will roll into Cal 2028 and Y+4 will roll into Cal 2029.

The assessments will be published in Megawatt Daily, Energy Trader, Platts Connect and Alert Pages.
