Platts proposes to extend Brazil Power forward curve assessments

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, proposes to launch 13 new daily assessments for the Brazil Power forward curve, effective Dec. 16, 2024.

The Brazil free power market currently comprises more than 51,300 consumers and 42% of total demand, according to the Brazilian Association of Energy Traders (ABRACEEL). The share of the free market could potentially grow to 60% by 2030 due to new government regulations allowing lower-voltage consumers to participate, according to Commodity Insights.

The assessments would consider market information reported to Platts and published throughout the day, including firm bids and offers, trades, and indicative values, as well as any other data deemed relevant to the assessment process.

The assessments would represent conventional power delivered in Brazil’s Southeast/Central-West subsystem, as defined by the Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico, and would be published as a value in Brazilian reais per Megawatt hour (Real/MWh) and US dollars per Megawatt hour ($/MWh).

The assessments would consider data submitted to Platts until 1600 Houston time and would follow the Platts US publishing schedule. The assessments would reflect electricity for delivery within stated months, quarters and calendar years, as follows:

  • Southeast/Central-West R$/MWh
  • M+12
  • M+13
  • M+14
  • Q+5
  • Q+6
  • Q+7
  • Q+8
  • Y+3
  • Y+4
  • Y+5
  • Y+6
  • Y+7
  • Y+8

Platts currently publishes daily forward month assessments covering one year, M through M+11.

The monthly assessments would roll into the next forward month on the first of each calendar month. For example, on Jan. 1, 2025, M would roll into January 2025 and M+1 would roll into February 2025.

The quarter assessments would roll on the first day of the new quarter. For example, on Jan. 1, 2025, Q+5 would roll into second-quarter 2026 and Q+6 would roll into third-quarter 2026.

The calendar year assessments would roll into the next year on the first day of the new year. For example, on Jan. 1, 2025, Y+3 would roll into Calendar 2028 and Y+4 would roll into Cal 2029.

The assessments would be published in Megawatt Daily, Energy Trader, Platts Connect and Alert Pages.
