Platts to launch Netherlands ERE price assessments

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will launch daily assessments for Netherlands emission reduction units (emissiereductie-eenheden, or ERE), effective Jan. 2, 2026.

This follows a proposal published July 31, where the launch date was previously intended for the start of November.

The Netherlands is expected to move away from its current renewable energy units ( hernieuwbare brandstofeenheden, or HBE) scheme to a carbon emissions reduction model (ERE) effective Jan. 1, 2026, under the Renewable Energy Directive III.

This decision is based on current market expectations regarding announced changes to the Dutch system. Should these circumstances change, Platts may update its decision as necessary through the publication of additional subscriber notes.

Following market feedback, Platts will introduce LRE-Electricity assessments under the road transport sector and increase the volume range to 1-4 million from the proposed 1-3 million. Platts will assess nine different ticket types, divided into sectors.

Landemissiereductie eenheid (LRE) will represent emission cuts from the land/road transport sector, Zeeemissiereductie eenheid (ZRE) will represent emission cuts from the maritime sector, and Binnenvaartreductie eenheid (BRE) will represent emission cuts from the inland shipping sector.

  • LRE-Advanced (LRE-A)
  • LRE-Annex IX B (LRE-B)
  • LRE-Conventional (LRE-C)
  • LRE-Other (LRE-O)
  • LRE-Electricity (LRE-E)
  • ZRE-Advanced (ZRE-A)
  • ZRE-Other (ZRE-O)
  • BRE-Advanced (BRE-A)
  • BRE-Annex IX B (BRE-B)
  • BRE-Other (BRE-O)

According to the Dutch Emissions Authority and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency:

  • Advanced tickets are created from biofuels produced from feedstocks mentioned in Annex IX, Part A of RED (waste flows and residues), listed in Annex 5 of the Netherlands Energy Transport Regulation.
  • Annex IX B tickets are created from biofuels produced from feedstocks mentioned in Annex IX, Part B of RED (used vegetable/animal oils and fats).
  • Conventional tickets are created from biofuels produced from food/feed crops.
  • Other tickets are created from remaining biofuels that are derived from feedstocks that don't fall into the above categories, such as animal fats that are not classified under Annex IX, Part B of RED, and other wastes and residues.

The assessments will be published daily to a 1630 London time market close in euros per kg of CO2 equivalent (kgCO2e), following a UK publishing schedule.

The assessments will reflect the first quarter of the year transfer and payment terms, with the assessment volume ranging from 1-4 million kg of CO2 equivalent. Volumes outside of this range may be considered and normalized to the basis range.

Platts will initially start assessing the current year vintage EREs from Jan. 2, 2026 to the last working day of 2026. Typically, the next-year vintage would be assessed from the first working day of November until the end of December. Going forward Platts will also assess a previous-year vintage from the first working day of the year until the last working day of April.

Therefore, effective Jan. 2, 2026, Platts will assess:

  • current-year vintage from January-December
  • next-year vintage from November-December
  • previous-year vintage from January-April (starting 2027)
