Platts updates CI for Canadian ethanol assessments Sept 16

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has updated the reference carbon intensity (CI) for Canadian ethanol price assessments, effective Sept. 16, 2025.

On July 15, the Environmental and Climate Change Canada finalized its Clean Fuel Regulations quarterly credit market report for 2024. In the report, the ECCC provided the weighted average CI of imported and produced low-carbon fuels by quarter -- including ethanol for the whole of 2024. The weighted averages for imported and produced ethanol are as follows:

Q1 2024Q2 2024Q3 2024Q4 2024
43.20 gCO2e/MJ42.50 gCO2e/MJ40.10 gCO2e/MJ39.50 gCO2e/MJ

Platts has updated the reference CI from 51.60 gCO2e/MJ to 39.50 gCO2e/MJ, reflecting the Q4 2024 weight average CI of imported and produced ethanol in Canada.

The reference CI represents the CI level of Platts Canadian ethanol assessments. Market participants can calculate the value of ethanol with a different CI by using the CFR CI cost per gallon and CFR Carbon Credit CC2 assessments.

This change impacts the following assessments and associated averages and conversions.

Assessment nameSymbol
Ethanol delivered Toronto (US cents/gal)BFEAT00
Ethanol delivered Toronto (CAN cents/liter)BFEBT00
Ethanol delivered Toronto Monthly Avg (US cents/gal)BFEAT03

Platts will aim to update the reference CI for its Canadian ethanol price assessments as new data on prevailing values becomes available, typically annually. Platts will communicate any proposed changes via subscriber notes.
