SUBSCRIBER NOTE: Platts launches Mexico rebar index

S&P Global Platts increased the frequency of Mexican domestic rebar assessment to weekly from monthly and created an index (base 100) off the monthly average of the assessment September 14, 2018.

The frequency of its steel "Rebar Mexico Dom Prod Dlvd" assessments (SB01603 and SB01199) has changed to weekly from monthly to better capture changes in pricing dynamics. Platts will publish this assessment as a single value in its publications.

In addition, market participants in Mexico requested the creation of an index derived from the existing assessment for ease of contract reference.

The move followed a period of market consultation that started March 27, 2018.

This would mean that specifications, volume, location, timing basis and currency for the new index would mirror that of the existing Mexican domestic rebar assessment:

Grade - 42, Norm NMX-C-407 Dimension - D 9.5-15.9 mm, L 12 m Volume - 500-1,000 mt Location - DDP Northeast Lead Time - 2-4 weeks Payment terms - Net 30 days after delivery Currency - Peso/mt and US/mt

Platts has based the index off the assessment close value of January 1, 2017. In other words, that date will serve as the 100 base for the index to provide index history for market participants.

The assessments and index are published in Platts Steel Price Report, Platts Price Analyzer and Platts Metals Alert, with a publication schedule following the Brazil public holiday calendar.
