Platts European aluminum assessments will not include CBAM costs from Jan 2026

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will not include the costs associated with the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) in its European duty paid P1020 and delivered duty paid (DDP) billet premium assessments from January 2026.

In practice, this means that Platts European aluminum premiums assessed on a duty-paid basis will remain inclusive of import duties but exclude any costs associated with the CBAM regulation. This follows market feedback that 2026 contracts are being negotiated with the CBAM costs kept separate from the aluminum product premium itself.

CBAM requires importers of primary aluminum and billet into the EU to purchase CBAM certificates for any imports from Jan. 1, 2026.

Platts first proposed its European aluminum assessments to not include CBAM costs in a subscriber note published July 17, available here .

The assessments impacted by this decision include:

AssessmentDaily Assessment Code
Aluminum duty paid in-warehouse Rotterdam premium ($/mt)AALVE00
Aluminum billet DDP Germany $/mtABGEA04
Aluminum billet DDP Italy $/mtABITA04

Platts assessments that leverage the above assessments in their calculation will, in turn, not include any costs associated with CBAM. This includes low-carbon aluminum and billet, zero-carbon aluminum, currency conversions and related weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly averages.

Platts has separately proposed to launch calculated CBAM values for costs associated with CBAM for European aluminum premiums assessed on a duty-paid basis imported into the EU, effective Jan. 2, 2026. Platts is inviting feedback on this proposal, available here , until Oct. 17, 2025.

Platts has also clarified that European aluminum assessments published on a duty-unpaid basis will be exclusive of CBAM costs by nature of the incoterm.
