Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has launched a new CARBEX carbon credit index on July 1, 2022, with its partner Viridios AI, a technology company that has built intelligence technology to bring pricing transparency to the emerging environmental commodity space.
This new CARBEX, which joins the six existing Platts-Viridios CARBEX indices published by Platts, reflects the value of voluntary carbon credits from Blue Carbon projects.
Platts first began publishing the CARBEX indices on Aug. 23, 2021 in order to enhance market transparency in the complex voluntary carbon credit and co-benefit markets. The launch note is available here: https://www.spglobal.com/commodityinsights/en/our-methodology/subscriber-notes/082321-platts-launches-six-new-carbon-credit-indices-powered-by-viridios-ai
Co-benefits are terms attached to carbon credits that provide evidence of meeting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, as defined by the United Nations General Assembly.
The new Blue Carbon CARBEX reflects projects that focus on preservation and improvements to coastal and marine ecosystems that act as important carbon sinks around the world. This index includes activities that preserve and/or restore coastal and marine ecosystems including mangroves, seagrass meadows, and tidal marshes, and includes the following SDGs:
Climate Action (13)
Life Below Water (14)
The Blue Carbon CARBEX is standard-neutral, global and reflects current year vintage and delivery.
On July 1, Platts publishes a historical time series with backfilled data of the Blue Carbon CARBEX index starting from 1/Jan/2021.
