Platts updates MPC MMBtu to mtCO2e conversion rate from June 15, 2022

Platts, a part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, is updating the MMBtu to mtCO2e conversion rate for its Methane Performance Certificate (MPC) calculations from 161.29 to 164.81, effective June 15, 2022.

The change reflects an update in the Global Warming Potential (GWP) for methane which was published by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the 2022 Sixth Assessment report. The 20-year GWP has been updated from 84 to 82.5. The GWP for methane is subject to a scientific review every three-to-five-year cycle of the IPCC science assessments.

This change affects the Platts MPC assessments, as well as the $/mtCO2e Methane Intensity Premium (MIP) calculations.
