Platts proposes launch of Blue Carbon CARBEX, powered by Viridios AI

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, is proposing to launch a new CARBEX carbon credit index with its partner Viridios AI, a technology company that has built intelligence technology to bring pricing transparency to the emerging environmental commodity space, from July 1, 2022.

This new CARBEX, which will join the six existing Platts-Viridios CARBEX indices published by Platts, will reflect the value of voluntary carbon credits from Blue Carbon projects.

Platts first began publishing the CARBEX indices on August 23, 2021 in order to enhance market transparency in the complex voluntary carbon credit and co-benefit markets. The launch note is available here: https://www.spglobal.com/commodityinsights/en/our-methodology/subscriber-notes/082321-platts-launches-six-new-carbon-credit-indices-powered-by-viridios-ai

Co-benefits are terms attached to carbon credits that provide evidence of meeting the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs, as defined by the United Nations General Assembly.

The new Blue Carbon CARBEX would reflect projects that focus on preservation and improvements to costal and marine ecosystems that act as important carbon sinks around the world. This index would include activities that preserve and/or restore coastal and marine ecosystems including mangroves, seagrass meadows, and tidal marshes, and include the following SDGs:

  • Climate Action (13)
  • Life Below Water (14)

The Blue Carbon CARBEX would be standard-neutral, global and reflect current year vintage and delivery.

Platts is soliciting feedback on the new proposed AI index, as well as additional feedback about other potential AI indices to help bring further transparency to pricing in the Voluntary Carbon Markets.
