SUBSCRIBER NOTE: Platts proposes launching new European thermal coal blended assessment

S&P Global Platts is initiating a market consultation on a proposal to launch a new thermal coal assessment reflecting the price of coals that are consumed in Northwest Europe, blended to achieve a 6,000 kcal/kg NAR heating value.

Platts believes the European Blended Price (EBP) will reflect more accurately the volumes, specifications and trade flows into Northwest Europe.

Platts will also publish the differential of the EBP to the current CIF ARA physical assessment (Platts code CSARM01).

The initial EBP proposed would be calculated to reflect a blend of 75% US Illinois Basin coal, and 25% Russian coal, to a 6,000 kcal/kg NAR basis.

The EBP's composition would be reviewed on a periodical basis to ensure it represents relevant trade flows.

All assessments would be published daily in Coal Trader International, Coal Trader, and on Global Coal Alert pages 430 and 450 and Market Data category CI.

Platts invites comments and questions by June 14, 2019 to coal@spglobal.com with a copy to pricegroup@spglobal.com.
