Platts extends consultation for updating T2 ethanol FOB Rotterdam min GHG level to June 30

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has extended the consultation period, welcoming feedback on a potential increase to the minimum Green House Gas level in the Ethanol T2 FOB Rotterdam barge assessment (AAYDT00) until June 30.

Prior to the extension, the consultation was due to end on May 31, 2025, following the publication of a subscriber note(opens in a new tab) in November that Platts will not change the minimum GHG savings for the T2 Ethanol FOB Rotterdam assessment in January 2026.

With the transposition of RED III into national legislations, more EU member states are anticipated to adopt emissions reduction mandates, which place more emphasis on the GHG savings of renewable fuels in fulfilling these obligations.

Platts seeks to understand how the introduction of RED III will influence the minimum GHG savings standard of ethanol in Europe and how any change may need to be reflected in the Platts T2 ethanol benchmark assessment specifications.

At present, the Platts T2 Ethanol FOB Rotterdam barge assessment reflects product meeting a maximum carbon intensity (CI) of 33.52 g of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per megajoule (MJ). This is equivalent to a minimum GHG saving of 60% based on a fossil fuel comparator of 83.8 g CO2e/MJ under the European Commission's Renewable Energy Directive (RED) I framework, or GHG savings of 64.3% based on the RED II fossil fuel comparator of 94 g CO2e/MJ.
