Platts to amend dry bulk index weightages to reflect trade flow changes
Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will amend the allocated weightages currently applied to time charter equivalent rates constituting its Capesize-linked Cape T4, Kamsarmax-linked KMAX 9, Ultramax-linked APUI 5 and Supramax-linked APSI 5 for non-scrubber as well as scrubber-fitted indexes, from June 1, 2023.
The weightages for the LNG-fueled Newcastlemax-linked NMAX GT5 index, too, will be amended.
With dry bulk trading patterns reshaping over the past years, Platts has reviewed the weights allocated to routes that form the weighted average indexes for Capesize, Kamsarmax/Panamax, Ultramax and Supramax dry bulk shipping segments. The revised weightages will reflect the prevailing trade flows.
Weightage for individual TCE assessments, calculated in ton-miles, is determined by the volume of Capesize, Kamsarmax/Panamax, Ultramax and Supramax ship movements observed between the related geographical regions associated with the respective voyages over the last three years from S&P Global Commodities at Sea trade flow software.
Ton-mile demand is calculated by multiplying the volume of cargo moved in metric tons by distance traveled in miles.
From June 1, 2023, the weightage for the average TCE assessments going into the Cape T4, KMAX 9, APSI 5 and APUI 5 indexes will be as follows, based on flows observed from Jan. 1, 2020, to Dec. 31, 2022:
