Platts to launch new Tokyo baseload spark spread assessments on June 1

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, will launch baseload spark spread assessments for Tokyo, Japan, effective June 1, 2023.

The spark spread assessments will be calculated as the differences of Platts JKM LNG derivatives assessments for the following forward periods over the Japanese power futures (Tokyo, Baseload) settlement prices for the same periods published by the European Energy Exchange (EEX).

The assessment periods will be for the JKM pricing month, next three months forward, the next two active quarters, and the next active season.

Platts first proposed to launch these assessments on April 12, via a subscriber note available here: https://www.spglobal.com/commodityinsights/en/our-methodology/subscriber-notes/041223-platts-proposes-to-launch-new-tokyo-baseload-spark-spread-assessments-on-june-1

These new spark spread calculations aim to provide the market with greater insights into margins for gas-fired power plants in Japan.

The new spark spreads will be published in $/MMBtu and Yen/kWh.

The new calculations will be published in LNG Daily, on Platts Dimensions Pro, as well as the LNG and PGN service lines on a daily basis.
