Platts clarifies Proof of Sustainability Certification in the Platts T2 ethanol assessment

S&P Global Platts would like to clarify that Platts T2 ethanol assessments reflect product meeting a maximum carbon intensity (CI) of 33.52g of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) per megajoule (MJ), this is equivalent to a minimum GHG saving of 60% based on a fossil fuel comparator of 83,8g CO2e/MJ under the European Commission's Renewable Energy Directive (RED) I framework.

Platts ethanol assessments reflect fuel ethanol that holds proof of sustainability (PoS) obtained in the framework of voluntary schemes approved by the EU Commission. Platts understands that it is current market practice for this documentation to be provided either as a single PoS certificate covering the entire ethanol parcel, or a number of PoS certificates which are equivalent in volume to the amount of ethanol delivered. In the latter case, the average CI, calculated from the individual PoS, is seen as representative of the whole parcel.

Platts biofuels methodology does not currently make provision for sellers who report deals via the Platts Market on Close assessment process (MOC) to provide a mixture of PoS documentation where individual PoS certificates are below 60% GHG savings for a minimum 60% GHG ethanol parcel, unless mutually agreed otherwise.
