Platts proposes to amend North American production cost-based renewable methanol methodology

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, is proposing to amend the methodology for its North American production cost-based renewable methanol assessment to better align with market practices, effective June 2, 2025.

Under this proposal, Platts would change its electricity price input from a daily variable to a previous-quarter average input.

The assessment represents the cost of production, transportation and storage for renewable methanol, underpinned by the average of the Platts previous-quarter daily electricity price assessments and its daily natural gas assessments (IGBAP00, GTFWD00, LJNCG00).

The assessment will continue to be aligned with the assumptions of the Process Economics Program (PEP) formula, which provides a calculation of production costs for renewable methanol produced via electrolysis and direct air-captured carbon dioxide.
