S&P Global Platts will launch six new daily container bunker charge assessments, as well as six net box rate assessments, excluding bunker charges, complementing Platts existing container assessments, from May 1, 2018.
Platts first proposed these new assessments in a note published March 23 (https://www.platts.com/subscriber-notes-details/26920802).
The new assessments will cover the following container routes that are already assessed by Platts:
Head-Haul
Route From To Symbol PBR1 North Asia North Continent PBR0100 PBR5 North Asia East Coast North America PBR0500 PBR13 North Asia West Coast North America PBR1300
Back-Haul
PBR2 North Continent North Asia PBR0200 PBR6 East Coast North America North Asia PBR0600 PBR14 West Coast North America North Asia PBR1400
The bunker charge assessments will reflect the bunker costs for transporting a 40 foot container on the above routes and will be expressed in $/FEU.
These assessments will be calculated using $/mt bunker prices in representative ports, published by Platts, including:
IFO380 PBR1 and PBR2 - Singapore, Gibraltar, Colombo and Rotterdam PBR5 and PBR6 - New York, Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk, Busan, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Vladivostok PBR13 and PBR14 - Los Angeles, Seattle, Busan, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Vladivostok
LSMGO PBR1 and PBR2 - Singapore, Gibraltar and Rotterdam PBR5 and PBR6 - New York, Savannah, Charleston, Norfolk, Busan and Hong Kong PBR13 and PBR14 - Los Angeles, Seattle, Busan and Hong Kong
The bunker charge round voyage percentage weighting allocation, vessel speed and consumption used in the bunker charge calculations are arrived at by extensive market survey and reflect market practice. All assessments will include a sea margin of 5%.
The voyage durations are arrived at by extensive market survey and are basis vessels proceeding on a round voyage to ports in geographical rotation within the below ranges:
PBR1 and PBR2 - North Asia-Singapore-Gibraltar-Colombo and Rotterdam range PBR5 and PBR6 - North Asia-Savannah-Charleston-Norfolk-New York range PBR13 and PBR14 - North Asia-Los Angeles-Seattle range
The container vessel sizes used in the assessments are:
PBR1 and PBR2 - 18,000 TEU vessel PBR5 and PBR6 - 9,000 TEU vessel PBR13 and PBR14 - 10,000 TEU vessel
The above variables used in calculating bunker charge assessments will be regularly updated to reflect market practice and new regulations.
The new net box rate assessments will be calculated by deducting the daily values of bunker charge assessments from the box rate assessments for the above routes and will also be on a $/FEU basis.
These prices will be published in Platts Dry Freight Wire, on the Platts Global Alert service on fixed page PGA 3950 and in the Platts database.
