SUBSCRIBER NOTE: Platts proposes new weekly Panamax metallurgical coal freight assessment

Platts proposes to launch a new weekly Panamax dry bulk freight assessment reflecting the growing metallurgical coal trade from West Coast Canada to East Coast India, effective June 3, 2016.

Growth in Indian steel production is driving increased demand for imported metallurgical coal.

The new assessment would reflect spot fixture activity basis loading at West Coast Canada, as Indian steel mills increase their metallurgical coal requirements from the North Pacific region.

The weekly assessment would be based on the latest information sourced from the market up to the close of the assessment window at 5:30 pm Singapore time on Fridays. Please note that in the event of Friday falling on a public holiday, the assessment would be published on the previous day.

The assessment would be based on modern Panamax dry bulk tonnage reflecting the Vancouver, West Coast Canada, to Vizag, East Coast India, route for a Panamax vessel carrying a metallurgical coal cargo of 75,000 mt (plus/minus 10%). The assessment would be published on a dollar per metric ton basis.
