Platts clarifies Canadian border natural gas methodology

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, is clarifying the delivery locations for natural gas indexes near the US-Canadian border.

These locations may be impacted by the imposition of import tariffs currently being considered by the US administration. By clarifying the delivery location as either in the US or Canada, Platts is seeking to avoid including both tariff and non-tariff trades in the Platts daily and monthly indexes.

US locations - GTN Kingsgate, Iroquois receipts, and Niagara:

Deliveries are on the US side of the border. Platts includes trades reported by market participants and trades on ICE by companies that do not report to Platts.

Canadian locations - NW Canadian bdr. (Sumas), Emerson Viking GL, Dawn Ontario:

Deliveries are on the Canadian side of the border. Platts includes trades reported by market participants, including trades executed on NGX.

Platts will continue to monitor trading activity and may request price submitters to identify trades that include the import tariff in the price.

Platts will continue to seek feedback from market participants on whether changes to methodology will be required.

This clarification follows a consultation period found here.

Methodology definitions can be found here.
