Platts begins publishing additional crude grade carbon intensity values

Platts, part of S&P Global Commodity Insights, has begun publishing monthly carbon intensity calculations for 27 additional crude oil fields in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America and North America, from Jan. 15.

This data is produced by the S&P Global Commodity Insights analytics team.

These crude carbon intensity values are published in both gCO2e/MJ and kgCO2e/ bbl units , and have been added to the list of Platts existing crude grade carbon intensity calculations, bringing the current total number of grades to 68, and increasing transparency on carbon intensities in the global crude market.

In line with the current methodology for carbon intensity scores produced by the S&P Global Commodity Insights analytics team, the carbon intensity of these 27 new grades is calculated using Stanford's Oil Production Greenhouse Gas Emissions Estimator (OPGEE) 2.0 model, combined with proprietary research and data from S&P Global.

Platts upstream crude carbon intensity calculations measure the impact of greenhouse gas emissions in the production lifecycle from production to storage terminal.
