What are European Recycled HDPE price assessments?

Platts recycled-HDPE assessment complements our existing virgin HDPE assessments in Northwest Europe, providing market participants with a more complete view of the HDPE market and enabling them to compare market fundamentals and pricing.

Platts assesses recycling HDPE light-colored pellets, suitable for consumer packaging applications in Northwest Europe.

Prices are assessed daily for free delivered material in EUR/mt.

Price assessments are complemented by a weekly commentary and rationale, which explains how the price assessment is reached and delves into the market fundamentals observed throughout the week.

How we assess European Recycled HDPE prices

Platts assessments are based on market information, including, but not limited to, firm bids and offers, and trades reported to the editor up to the close of business (4.30 pm London time) on each day.

All the information used to inform the assessment is published transparently on Platts platforms as "heards". An assessment rationale is published explaining what the assessments are and how they have been reached.

A weekly market commentary accompanies the price assessments and rationale, which highlights the most important trends that have affected the markets that week and provides insight into what the market expects over the coming weeks.

Platts European Recycled HDPE Weekly Commentary

  • High end applications support recyclers' margins
  • Buyers look to prime material as economic toll persists

Persistently tight production margins in the recycled polyolefins market were forcing recyclers to decrease production and purchasing volumes of post-consumer mixed HDPE bales.

With still high bales prices and waning appetite from pellet buyers, overall sales volumes were heard lower this week. Free-delivered bales in Germany were heard at Eur250/mt, with bales in Belgium, of a slightly higher quality, heard at Eur300/mt FD.

Some relief for recyclers able to produce high quality pellets came from the deodorized natural pellet market, where sales prices of between Eur1,400/mt and Eur1,600/mt were still achievable, according to sources. Light grey pellets were still trading within a tight range this week of Eur900/mt and Eur950/mt FD NWE, though slipped slightly this week to Eur940/mt FD NWE as sentiment on the buy side waned and appetite for cheaper prime material grew.

Platts European Recycled HDPE Weekly Rationale

S&P Global Platts assessed recycled HDPE light pellets at Eur940/mt FD NWE, down Eur10/mt day on day and up Eur5/mt on the week, within corroborated ranges heard at Eur900-Eur950/mt.
